Thousands of people are in line to get an extra £300 ‘top up’ payment from the government this month.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that eligible households will receive the free handout from November, in a welcome boost ahead of the expensive Christmas period.

The money is an additional cost of living payment that is given to people born before a certain date to help cover essential costs this winter.

To qualify for the £300, you must be entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2023 to 2024.

Anyone who is born before September 25, 1957 will automatically qualify for this which in turn means they will also receive an extra Pensioner Cost of Living Payment as well.

The DWP said in a recent reminder: “A Pensioner #CostOfLivingPayment of £300 per household will be paid as a top up to those eligible for the #WinterFuelPayment. Find out more .”

So if you meet the qualifying criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment, this entitles you to an extra ‘top up’ between £150 and £300 that will be paid with your normal payment from November.

Those who are eligible will receive a letter from the DWP this month which states exactly how much Winter Fuel Payment you will get.

The amount will vary between £250 and £600 depending on your circumstances and is provided to help pay for heating bills over the winter.

The total you receive includes the Pensioner Cost of Living Payment, which is worth up to £300, and is paid in addition to any other cost of living payments you may get with your benefit or tax credits.

If you don’t receive a letter from the DWP but think you are eligible for the payment, you should check if you need to submit a claim. You can do this by sending a claim form to the Winter Fuel Payment Centre or by calling 0800 731 0160.

Most people who are eligible will be paid by the DWP in November or December.
